Welcome
A Welcome from Steven Peters, ATHE President
Welcome to the Association for Theatre in Higher Education, a collective of individuals and theatre departments contributing to American and global culture through vision and leadership in the international study of theatre.
Come and join our 1700-strong membership comprised of artists, teachers, scholars, faculty and graduate students from 22 countries who share the wonderful benefits of camaraderie, knowledge-exchange, and the rewards of the conference experience.
If you have special skills or interest in electronic technology, marketing, advocacy, strategic planning, professional development, directing, acting, playwriting, design, theatre history, and other disciplines, please contact me! You can join one of ATHE’s working volunteer committees.
ATHE empowers and engages theatre faculty and graduate students through its publications, conferences, advocacy work and collaborations with other organizations, disseminating new information on critical issues and developments in theatre education, and promoting issues crucial to theatre.
ATHE actively supports theatre teaching, practice and production, scholarship and research, helping our membership to become better artists, teachers and scholars within the academy and the world.
Benefits of membership include:
- discounts on registration fees at our conferences
- access to ATHECALL, an e-mail list for theatre-related announcements and queries;
- access to ATHEWIRE, the members-only discussion list
- an online file archive containing ATHE guidelines and position papers, including promotion and tenure guidelines;
- access to ATHE’s Job Bank, the members’ source for new positions in academia;
- quarterly copies of THEATRE JOURNAL, ATHE’s scholarly journal in the field of theatre studies;
- semi-annual copies of THEATRE TOPICS, an ATHE journal devoted to issues in theatre practice, dramaturgy, and pedagogy;
- ATHENews – ATHE’s online newsletter; and
- participation in any of our twenty-three focus groups and eleven committees in your particular area of interest ranging from Music Theatre/Dance and Theory and Criticism to Latina/Latino Focus Group and Directing to Black Theatre Association.
ATHE has successful partnerships with the American Alliance for Theatre and Education (AATE), Black Theatre Network (BTN), Multimedia Educational Resources for Learning and Online Teaching (MERLOT), The Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival (KC/ACTF), and the American Society for Theatre Research (ASTR).
ATHE has been a vital part of my professional life for more than a decade. Beyond being a resource for teaching and learning, networking and artistic development, membership in ATHE has become a matter of professional survival and growth. Becoming president during this semester is just another opportunity to give something in return for all I have received from ATHE.
More than anything, I look forward to our work together. Please contact me with any questions or concerns.
Warm regards,
Steve Peters, Ph.D.
President
